NEW JERSEY GOMVB HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ATHLETES SHINE IN WEEK 1 GRIDIRON BATTLE: HOWELL VS BRICK MEMORIAL
HOWELL, NJ – It was a wild and exciting atmosphere in Thursday’s (Sept 2nd) game that pitted two GoMVB guys against each other at the QB position. Connor Dietz, the young sophomore, for the Brick Memorial Mustangs vs Stephen Jardim, the veteran signal caller, for the Howell Rebels. Two more Howell athletes are GoMVB members as well: the electrifying safety and slot receiver, Nick Vecchiarelli and the hard-nosed slashing running back, Conner Gordon.
Stephen Jardim played pretty much how everyone expected this precision player to perform. In control with two touchdown passes, north of 250 yards via the air and more than a fair share of effective scrambles and first down runs.
“I knew he would be a great leader and control a game really well,” said GoMVB analyst, Pat Marzo. “What I didn’t realize was how strong his arm is and how great his running ability was from the QB position.”
Conner Gordon ran hard and was the go-to guy when they needed a tough first down on the ground. He blocked well out of the backfield and was a threat as a receiver.
When asked about Gordon, Marzo simply said this, “He’s fast and runs so hard. This kid is a pure athlete and is a weapon-period.”
One of the nights biggest plays, however, belonged to Nick Vecchiarelli. Multiple tackles, hard fills and hits, a huge part of the offense and always there for the big play.
Marzo came away in awe of Vecchiarelli and had this to say, “Nick was a force on defense. He can handle the big boys in the box but was equally impressive in downfield coverage and with his open field tackles. I don’t have the stats on the game, but he had to be in on a dozen tackles. Offensively, he didn’t look like he could be covered and his open field running ability is as good as anyone put there.”
Despite the efforts from the three Howell stars mentioned above, Connor Dietz for the Mustangs scored three rushing touchdowns and ran for another, helping his team to a tight win. He served as a team leader and his team rallied alongside him. With all the praise Marzo had for the Howell GoMVB guys, he came away with the statement that the sophomore was the player of the game.
“Conner Dietz is a soph!” emphasized Marzo. “Most, including me, expected to see a kid, with the great talent that he has, grow into the position. That was not the case. This young stud played at a high level, ran with authority and threw both on the run and in the pocket like a veteran. Huge, huge future.”
Brick Memorial edged Howell 32-27 in front of a packed house. It was a night of high-level football that came down to the wire. A lot of the highlights from the game can be seen on twitter @gomvb. To get to each individual player’s profile, check out GOMVB.COM or click the links below:
