Contact@GoMVB.com Jersey City, NJ: Hudson Catholic High School in Jersey City (NJ) has been a state power in basketball for as long as anyone can remember, producing NBA players since the 1970s.

Joseph “Jo Jo” Garcia is one of a group of Hawks who are trying to change that perception. They want to make Hudson Catholic a football school too.

The 6-1, 190-pound wide receiver/defensive back is one of five Division 1 scholarship players - with more possibly to come - who grace the 2022 roster as he recently announced his decision to play at Long Island University.

Garcia had received offers from Wagner and Seton Hill and others interested in his services included Princeton, Navy, Pennsylvania, Holy Cross, Norfolk State and recent FCS addition St. Thomas.

Prior to the 2022 season, Garcia told NJ.com, “We all feel like that because everybody looks at Hudson Catholic as a basketball school. Nobody comes here and even thinks about there being football over here. There’s a lot to prove, a lot to show people that we’re here and we need to be known.”

For two seasons at least, Garcia and his teammates have given the inner-city school a football reputation. In 2021, the Hawks finished 8-2 before losing in the Non-Public Group B semifinals. In 2022, the Hawks were 7-2 and heading to the Group A playoffs on the weekend of Nov 4.

Garcia has caught close to 30 passes and 400 yards and is regarded as one of the toughest safeties in the North Jersey Super Conference.

In 2021, he was a First Team, All Conference player on offense and Second Team on Defense. He is on the verge of being named First Team All Conference on both sides of the ball in 2022.

''JoJo is the whole package,'' said Hudson Catholic veteran coach Lou Zampella."He is a physical kid at safety, he has great awareness and he's had a great year for us on both sides of the ball. He's also a great student, just a very high character kid with a great work ethic.''

Garcia, who turned his work ethic up a notch after losing in the 2021 playoffs, got his name out there because of his play on the field but by also attending such off-season camps as Next Level Culture 7 on 7 and the PCR Combine where his skills could really be displayed.

It doesn't hurt that his grade point average is a shade under 4.0.

Scouting Report: "Offensively he not only has the size at 6-1, but he can jump to make a play, he has the hands to make plays and he has the speed to get ahead of defenders. Defensively, his athletic ability allows him to see the whole field and go to where the ball is, while being physical at the same time.''
