Alabama Sophomore Evan Lightsey Has Sights on Taking His Game to The College Level

Alabama Sophomore Evan Lightsey Has Sights on Taking His Game to The College LevelFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 11, 2023 Tuscaloosa, AL: Evan Lightsey began playing baseball on the tee-ball circuit at the age of 3. He fell in love with the game early and his love for the game has grown through the years with a steady progression as he has reached the ago of 15. Now a member of the Class of 2025 at the American Christian Academy, the Tuscaloosa resident is right where he feels he needs to be in order to reach his goal of playing on the collegiate level. "This was my first year on the varsity,'' said the 6-foot, 205-pounder who bats left and throws left. "So I've been learning a lot and I'm very confident. I feel I am an elite hitter and very good in the field. Eventually I want to play in college and I feel I'm on my way as long as I keep working hard.'' Lightsey projects himself as a pitcher, but his versatility allows him to be plugged in other positions as he earns his stripes on the mound. This past season, he has been a starter in right field and DH. Lightsey feels as though he is solid at the plate and is quite adept in the field. But again, he wants to pitch. "I'm throwing 84 right now,'' said Lightsey, who bench presses 250 pounds and squats 400 pounds. "I need to get to 89 or 90 to play in college and I've been working on my overall strength. I'm left-handed, which helps and I have a different delivery than most lefties. I'm more over the top and I come straight down. It's hard to explain, but people say it's harder to hit than most lefties.'' Another intangible Lightsey takes advantage of is the chemistry that comes with having his step brother Addison Goodman playing alongside him. The two played together at the varsity level and now will make the transition together to play for American Christian. "I look up to him and he teaches me a lot since he has experience on varsity,'' said Lightsey. "I don't drive yet, so he drives me home from practice and we talk a lot. We live together sometimes so we are always talking.'' If you're athletic and you live in Tuscaloosa, you almost have to play football. Lightsey fits that mold as he has been a starter since his freshman year. He was a tight end as a freshman, moving to linebacker last fall. He has been a starter for a program which has gone 23-4 the last two seasons combined. But college football is not in the plans. "I love both sports, but I see my future in baseball, that's my true passion,'' said Lightsey, who has had ample time to evaluate his time on the gridiron, playing football since he was seven. In the off-season, Lightsey will continue to work in the weight room to help him in both sports and will work out with the football team. But he also plans on spending plenty of time on the diamond. "I've been invited to a lot of baseball camps and will choose which ones to attend,'' said Lightsey, who wears No. 28. "I've been picked to play for the Southeast team in a big tournament, which will be great exposure.'' PAST PERFORMANCE In 2022, Lightsey showed what he is capable of: Games Played: 40 AB: 105 Batting Avg: .448 2B: 14 3B: 2 HR: 4 RBI: 34 Strike Outs: 12 Walks: 12 OBP: .516 SCOUTING REPORT:''Lightsey is a left-handed power hitter with a quick, uppercut swing. He possesses a good eye at the plate and is also a contact hitter. He has delivered many a clutch hit, including walk-off homers on the sub-varsity level/summer ball curcuit. At 6-foot, over 200 pounds and left handed, he is quite a presence on the mound who comes right at batters with an over-the-top, downhill delivery.''
