Manalapan, NJ: Stephen Myers is an athlete whose numbers aren't gaudy just yet, but whose contributions to a team who’s about to battle for a state title, are quite valuable.
That's what happens when you are on a team loaded with talent, it's kind of a wait your turn mentality, at least offensively.
Such is life playing for Red Bank Catholic (NJ), a perennial state power down at the Jersey Shore.
A 6-foot, 190-pound junior, Myers plays behind three 3-year starters at wide receiver, so his time has been limited on the offensive end. On defense, however, he plays the majority of the games at defensive back. He has two interceptions and a host of 'big' plays.
"He's an excellent player for us on the defensive side,'' said RBC coach Mike Lange. "He may not have big numbers to speak of, but he has made so many big plays for us at defensive back. Stephen is a big part of our team. If we make it to the title game, he will be out there making plays for us, so we really need him.''
As for next season, Lange sees the role of Myers increasing - on both sides of the ball.
"Offensively he will move up the ladder and be a big part of our offense,'' said Lange. "We expect him to be a big part of the offense. Defensively, we expect him to be out there and continuing to make plays. One thing about him, he has improved every week for us. He has a strong work ethic, so I expect him to keep getting even better.''
As for college, Lange feels he could play at the Division 1 level.
"Stephen is really good academically so schools such as Lehigh and Lafayette are interested,'' said Lange. "I have sent his tapes out to those schools.”
"He is an exceptional athlete. He runs deceptively well, he goes up and gets the ball on both sides of the ball, he's a real ball hawk.''
Myers can bench press 240 pounds and squat 365. In the classroom he maintains a 3.4 gpa with an SAT score of 1120.
Scouting Report: "Myers excels on the defensive side of the ball where he has emerged as an athlete with sharp instincts. He can battle with a receiver at the line of scrimmage using his physicality, He can defend step for step and has the ability to come up and stop the ball when the play becomes a run. He will win most jump balls and he can hit. He hasn't had a lot of chances as a receiver because of high quality experienced players taking that time away, but next season he is expected to transfer his abilities and instincts on the defensive side to the offensive side and be as equally successful.''
